Truly, Perth is a destination for old souls or anyone looking to leave the treacherous urban life of a city-dweller, where time is money, and money is life. Perth seems to emanate a relaxing vibe, no matter the time of day. The weekday morning commute isn’t as toxic as the jams we experience in Singapore and public transportation is redundant after 6pm – because it doesn’t seem like anyone’s travelling anywhere anymore.

So, is a place that appears to be lifeless and somewhat boring perfect for a Singaporean visitor (who’s so used to the hectic life)?

Turns out, Perth is made for Singaporeans – which is why there are so many Singaporeans living in Perth. It’s a great respite from our life of hustling for ’em Yusof Ishaks (and by Yusof Ishaks, I meant money).

In this article, we let you know why you should be travelling to Perth in your time off.

1. Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is an offshore island – it’s basically Pulau Ubin on steroids. Unlike Ubin, where the beaches are limited and small, and everything seems incredibly small and cramped, Rottnest Island is expansive and freeing. Do grab a bike from the local rental because the best spots are kilometres away.

There are many ‘secret’ beaches in Rottnest Island, simply because of its vastness. Get to Rottnest Island on a summer weekday. The island is vacant and hauntingly beautiful (actually everything is hauntingly beautiful sans humans).

The water’s extremely clear (albeit salty), the sand’s white, and the sun’s scorching (make sure to get some lotion!). However, the laying by the beach isn’t the only thing you can enjoy. Visit the lighthouse that greets the magnificent sea breeze, take a cute selfie with a smiling quokka, go beach-hopping on your bikes and enjoy a delicious vanilla ice cream from the local store.

2. King’s Park

King’s Park is Perth’s proud tourist spot located at a high altitude. And you know what that means right? With high altitude comes amazing scenery!

Before we continue, let me just get three things cleared up:

1. Perth is bloody hot, but dry (thank god)
2. The wind, though, is cooling
3. Perth is a city for picnic lovers

Up at King’s Park, it gets extremely cold at night due to strong winds and absence of sun. It shouldn’t matter too much though.

Have yourself a picnic amongst the bokeh of lights supplied by the CBD at night, or simply enjoy the panoramic view of the city that meets the sea during the day.

3. Scarborough Beach

Scarborough Beach is one specially vacant paradise. Again, as tourists, you have the luxury of visiting places during the weekday. So do that. Visit Scarborough beach on a weeknight. It’s lovely. In fact, I’d encourage everyone to stay at the Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough – it’s so close to Scarborough beach!

Let me just paint you a picture (with words) of how Scarborough Beach feels like at night:

You settle down by the beach on damp sand and wonder why it’s moist when the whole day had been invariably sunny and dry. The land breeze is strong and you feel cold, but you thank god for the jacket you’re wearing. It’s incredibly dark and slightly eerie, your vision doesn’t even transcend 20 metres ahead. But even this is not enough to persuade you to leave – the allure of the beach keeps you locked inside. Besides, ghouls don’t exist in Australia so there’s nothing to be afraid of. How about humans? None. No soul in sight. It’s just you.

The beach stretches for miles in a straight line, and you’ll be able to observe the beach for hundreds of metres ahead – if only there is daylight. No matter, it’s better this way. Your vision may be impaired, but you can clearly listen to the waves – assuming its high tide – slowly crash from coast to coast. It was like thunder with a prolonged reverberation. A haunting, hollow melody. But the thing that bore the most beauty was the sky – a blanket of stars hung over from the ocean line to the buildings behind you. You’ve never seen this much stars in your life and for a good reason too; Singapore is as bright as day in the night. In the midst of all this, there goes the fourth shooting star.

True story.

4. Breakwater Parade @ Mandurah

Honestly, Scarborough beach isn’t the only place that’s amazing. While Scarborough is purely a beach (with some pubs and cafes around the area), Mandurah’s Breakwater Parade is a bay for private boats and yachts. Imagine Keppel Bay but way bigger, plus, affordable restaurants and shops!

At the Breakwater Parade, take as many Instagram-worthy pictures as possible. Even Keppel Bay isn’t this grand! Best of all, it’s joined by the Silver Sands Resort beach. Here’s what you need to do at Breakwater Parade:

Get yourself some grand fish and chips from a restaurant called Sharkies. It’s one of the best!

5. Fremantle

Fremantle, or ‘Freo’ as they term it endearingly, is one place that exudes culture, that allows for an awesome shopping trip. If you’re looking for mementos, guess what? Here’s the place! Specifically, the Fremantle Market. Handicrafts, clothes, local produce, food and drinks, and many others are available here.

Now, the market isn’t the only thing that you need to check out in Fremantle. Head west and you’ll get to a community park fit for yet another picnic. It fits your itinerary perfectly! Shop for stuff you need to bring back home, as well as food for a small picnic. Trust me, a picnic here will ensure you slow down to enjoy the activities undertaken around you!

6. Hillary’s Boat Harbour

Just like Breakwater Parade at Mandurah, Hillary’s Boat Harbour is another breakwater with a Harbour and a beach called Pinaaroo Point. Yes, as you can tell, Perth (or Australia in general) is basically just a huge beach that was converted into a city. I’m kidding, of course. The point is, it’s full of beautiful beaches and Australians fully embrace the beach culture – you’ll even see Australians in beachwear, still soaking wet from their beach debaucheries, boarding the train!

Anyway, Hilary’s Boat Harbour is located close to the Perth City Centre compared to Mandurah. It should be relatively easier to get to Hillary’s than Mandurah if you’re not driving!

7. Kalamunda Zig Zag Lookout

It is impossible to reach Kalamunda Zig Zag without your own private transport. Get a car, or hire a driver! The Kalamunda Zig Zag basically refers to the zig-zagging of the road as it ascends in height.

At the same time, as it reaches quite a surmountable height, what you’re left is, is a magnificent lookout that enables you to take in a breathtaking view of Perth City creeping into the forest. The airport resides close to Kalamunda and you’ll be able to see planes soaring above you, especially domestic flights.

8. Noble Falls, Wooroloo Brook

Here’s another site that requires private transportation. Noble Falls is about an hour drive out of Perth’s city centre. You’ll find yourself in the middle of the wilderness, just as you did in Kalamunda, but hey, this is Australia we’re talking about! It’s not the down under if there isn’t enough wilderness!

Anyway, what can you expect at Noble Falls Gidgegannup? White water that’s immensely beautiful. It’s literally a scenery from the movies and TV shows that show mountainous and wilderness regions. Its beauty is alluring and natural. Places we can never expect to see in Singapore!

There’s a tavern where you can enjoy the company of friendly locals while sipping on booze, or, you can head out the doors and have yourself a pretty (you guess it) picnic!

9. Chidley Way, Mosman Park

Chidley way is a small road in Mosman Park that overlooks Swan River as it flows to Karakatta Bank. Of course, Chidley Way is actually a luxurious residential park with awesome bungalows assimilated to the river bank. Not only will you be able to pick a great spot for a picnic, you’ll also get first-hand view of some premium homes.

10. A respite – a tempo slowdown

200380_10150127209184041_5109790_n

I can definitely name more places in Perth for you to visit that’ll blow your mind. However, the main idea is this: Perth is great as a respite from Singapore’s business district. Perth peeps walk slow as a testament to their relaxed lifestyle and Singaporeans ought to learn a thing or two from their books!
