This man tells you 5 real-est reasons to work overseas that you probably wouldn’t know

Sick and tired of the dull routine every day? Hate the squeeze on the MRT every morning and evening? Disgusted at the traffic jams? Earning a shitload of money but don’t have time to spend it? Okay fine, maybe not the last one, you know we don’t earn enough in Singapore, or at least that’s what we think.

If you’re still single and don’t have much holding you back, these are all signs that you should leave the mirage that is Singapore and leave its sterile, stifling way of life in favour of a job in another country. Not only will you experience and learn so much more, but also get to appreciate what makes Singapore tick; and perhaps love (and hate) your little red dot of a motherland so much more.

Lower cost of living
We all know that Singapore is one of the most expensive cities to live in – but many people seem to have conveniently forgotten, or perhaps taken for granted, why this is the case. Common sense tells you that a place that doesn’t have any natural resources at all has to import almost everything, so of course everything is more expensive here. You don’t have to go far to know that things are cheaper elsewhere – if you can get a good pay package based on a Singaporean salary, you’re all set for more disposable income.

Hone your lost awareness
Most Singaporeans no longer have the sense of situational awareness people used to have, because the government is so efficient that the situation is take care of already. I’ve read a Chinese news report where a conman said that Singaporeans are one of the easiest to fool and con; go overseas and sharpen your sense. You might have to pay a small tuition fee, but you will benefit for life, and will never become that huge carrot head ever again.

Enjoy more space
Of course, you’re not going to enjoy this if you’re going to a major city to work, but why not take a look at areas that are much less densely populated, such as China’s tier 2 cities? I now work in a district that is as big as Singapore but only has 1.2 million people compared to Singapore’s 5.5 million; and has all fast food chains, restaurants and shopping centres that you need.

See how the real world works
Unfortunately, it is my personal belief after having worked overseas that most Singaporeans would not be able to survive anywhere outside of Singapore. The phrase ‘rules are meant to be broken’ is an everyday occurrence, and there are no restrictions to behaviour other than how well you are able to communicate, empathise and interact with other people. See with your own eyes how the real world works, and return to Singapore a happier person.

Widen your world view
Having knowledge about a country is one thing; experiencing it is another. If you can lower your expectations about another country just by putting things into perspective and realizing that Singapore is an anomaly in this world, and take that first step to venturing out, you will have a much clearer understanding and appreciation for both the world and Singapore.
