10 Tips for Ladies Travelling Alone Even If They Are Kiasi

$

“Mummy, I’m flying in a week.”

“Who you going with?”

“Errr… alone?”

“Aiyo! You siao ah! Go alone very dangerous one leh.”

But… I went. Yup, this very dialogue happens the very first time I took my solo trip. It was a last-minute flight booking. Call me a coward first, because I was so afraid to venture out on my own.

The only thing I could do was flight and hotel shopping online all day long but the web page just stayed where it was, never making it to the payment page. The idea of just surviving alone in a foreign land without knowing anyone just scares the hell out of me.

But then, that very night, I decided to just book first and think later. A few clicks after and starting a fire in my bank account, shit got real. The next thing I had to deal with was not just my anxieties but my mum’s.

So I kept it from her until the week before my trip and there goes the conversation you just read a while back.

For those who have serious concerns over being solo in a foreign country, take a look at these 10 tips for ladies (who are planning to) travel alone.

Read up

I know of ladies who travel without much planning because #YOLO mah.

But if you’re not so much an advocate of the YOLO concept, then do your thorough read-ups, please. I suggest that you start browsing travel blogs and hear from the people who’ve gone before you.

Since they’ve already stepped on the land and are (definitely) back home in one piece, take heed or bits of advice. Don’t just read up the good stuff. Take in the negative so you know what to expect when you’re there. It’s also about managing expectations.

Join Facebook groups

Join Facebook groups to get you in the loop for the latest stories and happenings.

My favorites are Girls Love Travel & The Solo Female Traveler Network. If you’re a travel enthusiast, you will love the stories and updates those ladies have there.

Do a Facebook search!

Research

Once you’ve got a more or less all-rounded feedback from people all over the world, start researching on your own.

Google and TripAdvisor are my best virtual friends when it comes to fact-finding. Identify the must-see places from TripAdvisor that you want to visit then plan your route around it. By that, I mean your accommodations too.

For example, when I was planning my trip to Langkawi, I wanted to visit the Sky Cab and Sky Bridge. So to give us a little context, the Sky Cab is located at Oriental Village. It’s something like Sentosa but a much further drive in (it’s the plenty-of-lands Malaysia after all).

Here’s the view from the top of the Sky Cab.

Image: medium.com/@CelesteL130617

I had two options. First, I could stay somewhere out of Oriental Village and then take a cab where the cable car is located. Or second, I could stay near to Oriental Village and then walk over to the attraction.

Ponder over it. The second option is definitely more attractive in all aspects because you’re minimizing the times you have to cab, alone, in a foreign land.

If you’ve picked the first option, then you have to cab from your accommodation to your destination and then back. But if you choose the latter, you only need to cab once to your accommodation, where your must-see attraction is located.

Makes sense? It’s all about connecting the dots.

Go to Google’s ‘street view’

When I was planning my solo trip to Phuket, Google’s ‘street view’ saved me.

Prior to the trip, thank God I searched for the location of the hostel and viewed the street view the night before I flew.

Image: Google Maps

What it gave me was a rough gauge on the turns and obvious ‘landmarks’ so I was able to direct the Grab driver when he couldn’t find my hostel. I felt like a heroine for that 3 seconds. That was enough to feed my ego.

It works for most locations because Google’s cool like that. So, start searching for the street views and teleport yourself to your dream destination at the comfort of your home!

I swear this is one of the things that gives me the confidence that I can survive (almost) anywhere with Google, my love. You can take screenshots for future references during your trip.

Book your Wi-Fi router or get a SIM card

Whenever I travel alone, there’s a 98% chance I’ll book a Wi-Fi router. No, it’s not for the ‘gram, it’s for connecting with the worried-sick family.

I’m definitely not the sort that’s overly attached and miss home after reaching Changi Airport. But I guess my family members are, so… no choice lor.

My favorite’s got to be the ChangiWiFi router from Changi Recommends. It’s a small little router that’s able to fit in a sling bag that you use to store your passport and valuables.

Image: promotions.americanexpress.com.sg

“But so leh chey leh… carry one thing around.”

If you don’t want to be lugging a small router around, then I suggest getting a prepaid SIM card from Changi Recommends or buy one when you reach your destination. Just make sure you read reviews on what’s the best local telco provider and expected price range to pay.

Download offline Google maps

Wi-Fi access is also my saving grace because I use that for my Uber or Grab trips and to glue my eyes to the map in real time.

But if you prefer to shut the world and your family off, then you can download Google offline maps before you fly.

Google maps help you navigate around on the ground and is perfect if you’re a 路痴 (Translation: can’t-recognize-roads idiot) like me. Or alternatively, smile, open your mouth and ask the locals for direction.

Slow down & breathe

Congratulations on surviving the turbulence and internal turmoil during your flight.

You know the real adventure begins when you walk down the aisle, passing the air stewards and stewardesses and hear this, “Thank you & see you again”.

Yeah, I hope I get to see you again if I survive the trip and make it to catch my return flight back home.

Oh, sorry. I’m sure you will make it. Don’t worry. 😉

As you walk to the immigration to get your stamp of approval to enter the land of paradise you’ve painstakingly read-up on and researched, you realize that you’re really on your own this time.

You may or may not be excited but this one tip works in all situations: slow down and breathe. Don’t be in a rush because that would put more eyeballs on you.

Image: giphy.com

Being calm and collected is the way forward. Go to the toilet, put on that layer of lip tint, then walk out like you own this. You got this, girl!

Mind your clothings

While it varies from country to country and culture to culture, it’s best to pay attention to what you’re wearing.

You may want to stand out at your workplace and shine bright like a diamond at your school’s reunion, but not when you’re overseas, alone.

Save that low neckline, sexy, black dress for another occasion. Ladies, It’s not that you have to be dull, boring or even resort to putting on your granny’s two-piece overall.

Image: ebay.ie

The idea is to not direct too much attention to yourself and let the predators prey on you. Blend in with the locals, or as much as you can.

Stay in hotels

You might have come across solo travelers telling you to stay in hostels instead of hotels.

One reason being this: being among people make you feel less lonely. What’s more, it’s a good opportunity to hit up some hunks. Oops, I mean to meet some like-minded friends.

But if you’re traveling solo for the first time, I would suggest that you pick a hotel instead. Not those shady ones with 5.0 rating on Agoda but an average one, say at least 7.5?

It may be my personal preference but I feel much safer in a hotel or guesthouse (private room) than in a hostel. I only tried staying in a hostel during my second solo trip to Phuket but I did not catch a good sleep. It’s probably the unconscious nerves getting to me at night because I forgot my lock.

Yes, please bring a lock or two so you can lock up your essential belongings at night before you hit the sack. Some hostels provide lockers with keys but some don’t… so just you know.

Image: hostel4me.com

Go on short trips

For a start. If you’re starting out, taking your first solo trip, go for a short trip. It’s up to you to define how ‘short’ is short because we’re all different in our own ways.

Too short and you might think you haven’t seen enough, too long and you will start to be homesick. But then again, not everyone’s homesick THAT easily.

Ultimately, it’s your life – one life – and your rules, so put boring at the end of your to-do list.

Not fully exhaustive

Again, there’s only so much I can write with 10 points as a barrier. We’ve not even gotten to some of the practical tips like keeping some of your money in your shoes or why you should not smile at men while in India.

These 10 tips are based on my solo travel experiences so I’m just sharing it out of goodwill. Know of ladies out there who are yearning to travel solo but know not where to start? Spread the word!

For those you’ve never thought of traveling solo, that’s perfectly fine because you know you can always rely on that one friend who’s never, ever going to take a plane alone.

No matter what you choose, solo, couple or a group, remember that you can’t turn back time. Go make memories while you’re still able to and learn to laugh when things don’t go your way. Yup, even when you’re hanging mid-air, on one arm, and dragged into the ocean like a net while parasailing.

Truly, an unpleasant experience will only make you stronger.

Nothing is impossible!

10 Weirdest Festivals from Around the World That You Probably Didn’t Know About

$

Festivals are a way for the community to come together and celebrate their shared culture and interests.

It’s also a way for outsiders to experience a part of the unique local culture. If you’re a fan of extraordinary adventures, here are 10 festivals around the world which are fun yet entirely bizarre. Like, seriously bizarre.

Be prepared to get culture-shocked!

La Tomatina

Image: telegraph.co.uk
Image: telegraph.co.uk

If you love tomatoes, this festival in the small town on Bunyol in Spain is sure to catch your fancy. Every year, thousands gather to have the biggest tomato street fight in the world, where people get prepared to smash tomatoes on their friends and loved ones, soaking the town in bright red tomato juice.

I don’t know if they eat the tomatoes after that…or maybe that’s where our ketchup comes from?

Kanamara Matsuri

Image: everfest.com
Image: everfest.com

This Japanese festival is definitely not for the more conservative-minded as it celebrates the male genitalia in a very obvious way, by parading large wooden models of it through the streets. There are also candy, carved vegetables , illustrations and various other merchandise sold that pays homage to the male member.

Cooper ‘s Hill Cheese Rolling and Wake

Image: boston.com
Image: boston.com

Sometimes, you just need to roll cheese down a hill and chase after it to destress, and that’s what the folks in Gloucester do once a year. Needless to say, the downhill chase goes awry for many of the participants and they have to be carted off to the hospital once they reach the bottom. The good news is, the first person past the finished line wins the cheese as his or her prize.

The Running of the Bulls

Image: emaze.com
Image: emaze.com

Spain seems to be full of extraordinary festivals and the Pamplona Bull run is no exception. Here, grown men volunteer to run down the street while being chased by angry bulls. Needless to say, this is a rather dangerous event: nearly 300 people have been injured and up to 13 killed in this festival.

Boryeong  Mud Festival

Image: ibtimes.co.uk
Image: ibtimes.co.uk

South Koreans swear so much by the medicinal and health benefits of the mud at Boryeong that they have dedicated an entire festival to it. The highlight of the whole event is a mud bath for visitors on Daecheon beach where truckloads of mud are dumped there to make a mud pool for a variety of activities. Sounds fun?

El Colacho

Image: slate.com
Image: slate.com

Here’s another dangerous festival in Spain, and this time it involves grown men dressed as the devil jumping over babies who are less than a year old. The helpless infants are laid in a row on the ground and then the men take turns to leap over them, supposedly cleansing the town of evil for another year.

Look at how scared the babies are, no?

Festa Del Cornuto

Image: generbus.it
Image: generbus.it

The festival of horns is celebrated in Rocca Canterano , a city near Rome and honours men who have been cheated on by their partners. They parade the streets wearing horns, and often weep or break gifts from ex-wives or lovers to signify their anger and grief.

Wife Carrying Championship

Image: nbcnews.com
Image: nbcnews.com

Want to watch a marathon with a difference? Well, in Finland you can. In this race, male participants cover more than 250 km in an obstacle-filled course, all the while carrying their spouses on their backs. Participants come from all over the world and it’s a thoroughly legit sport.

Burning Man

Image: theatlantic.com
Image: theatlantic.com

Burning man is an experimental art festival where about 50,000 people gather in the Nevada desert over a period of one week. Themes include creative innovations that are environmentally friendly and sustainable, as well as rich is a self expression. The highlight of this festival is the burning of a giant effigy that usually signifies the end of the festival.

World Bog Snorkeling Championship

Image: wikipedia.org
Image: wikipedia.org

This race takes place in Wales, UK every year and participants dress up in interesting costumes to wade through trenches of thick bog so as to be the fastest bog wader. In recent years, this race has helped raise awareness on environmental preservation issues too. Pretty lit!

5 Things to Do at Batam or It Would Have Been a Wasted Trip

$

If you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway, look no further: Batam Island’s where you should go. Cheap shopping? Check. Eat-all-you-can seafood buffets? Check. Affordable spa massages? Check. Just 45 minutes away from Singapore by ferry, it’s no surprise why the island is such a popular tourist destination among locals.

Seriously, you can actually see it from Harbourfront –it’s that near. So instead of flying all the way to Krabi or Phuket for a relaxing retreat, why not spend that money on some quality sight-seeing at Batam instead? In case you’re wondering what the place has to offer, here’s our list of 5 must-dos.

1. Trying out fresh seafood

Image: vsl / Shutterstock.com

When you’re in Batam, expect to be served with nothing but the freshest seafood. From crabs to conches to abalones, what better way is there to treat yourself than with an eat-all-you-can seafood buffet?

2. Shopping ‘til you drop

Image: berahim halim / Shutterstock.com

Batam City Square (BCS), Mega Mall, Nagoya Hill Shopping Centre – all of these are familiar names to the not-so-casual shopper. Check out Golden Truly, a three-level departmental store at BCS; the Food Arcade at Nagoya Hill; and the giant Hypermart at Mega Mall. The best part about shopping at Batam? It’s a duty-free zone – which means you can purchase everything at dirt-cheap prices.

3. Pamper yourself with a massage

Image: Mila Supinskaya Glashchenko / Shutterstock.com

Guess what – Bangkok isn’t the only place where you can get an affordable full-body massage. For just 170,000 Rp (SGD $25), you can get a traditional Balinese massage at Batam Centre right after you step off the ferry.

4. Getting durians for cheap

Image: Muhamad_Firdaus / Shutterstock.com

For all you Mao Shan Wang fans out there – ever get sick of forking out $25 for just 1kg of durians? Now you don’t have to! Batam’s durian season happens often as well, which means: durians for cheap.

5. Snacking on Kueh Lapis

Image: ThamKC / Shutterstock.com

Kueh Lapis, or Thousand-Layer Cake, can be easily found in Singapore, but they’re a far cry from those you can get in Batam. Here, you can find Cinnamon, Cheese, and Mocha-flavoured Kueh Lapis, and these pastries are as quirky as they are delicious. Make sure you grab a few boxes back to Singapore!

TW Restaurant Gives 1 Slice of Meat Free for Every CM If Your Height is Less than 175cm

Do you feel like a corgi whenever you walk into a restaurant?

Image: giphy.com

Has a waiter once given you a child seat when you ask for a chia seed?

If so, then this restaurant is for you.

Because if you’re vertically challenged, you’d get free food.

Taiwan Hotpot Restaurant Gives One Slice of Meat for Every CM for People Who Are Less than 175cm

Head down to 爱食锅麻辣鸳鸯 in Kaohsiung City and you’ll have thought that this is yet another hotpot restaurant.

But stroll through their Instagram tagged images and you’ll see images like this:

Are they promising that you’ll grow taller after having a meal there?

Well, it’s the opposite.

Since May this year, they’re rewarding you for being…vertically challenged.

Lest you’ve returned your Chinese to your Chinese teacher, here’s what the sign says (I made it poetic ‘cuz why not):

Your height shouldn’t determine you
Consuming Meat shouldn’t stress you

From now on, anyone less than 175cm
Will get a slice of meat for every cm

Suffice to say, Shakespeare will be proud and my colleague XiaoBeach73 would be happy.

A number of people have accepted the challenge and obviously, the ladies have the benefit since they’re usually less than 170 cm.

However, here’s the kicker: there is a minimum spend of NT$688 per person, which is roughly about SGD$30.20.

Not exactly the price you’d have expected from a Taiwan restaurant.

But some of the items there look Instagram-worthy, like their bear-shaped steamboat…

…their neatly placed meat…

…and, erm, Taiwan meimeis there.

There are three outlets there, and unfortunately none of them is in Taipei (Singaporeans’ favourite):

297 Yucheng Road, Zuoying District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan 813
57, Dadun 20th Street, Xitun District, Taichung City, Taiwan 40758
252 Xintian Road, Qianjin District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan 801

According to a Google user, the opening hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. from Monday to Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

It’s supposedly closed on Sunday, but since there hasn’t been any confirmation by the restaurant, you might want to call at +886 7 221 0288 (one of the outlets’ number) before heading down.

In the meantime, please don’t do this there:

You’re insulting people like XiaoBeach73.

And by the way, if you like free food, you might want to join our giveaway in our Instagram here:

5 Cheapest Destinations to Fly to During the National Day / Hari Raya Haji Super-Long Weekend

$
0
0

With National Day and Hari Raya Haji landing on Friday, August 9th and Sunday, August 11th respectively, Singaporeans will get the chance for a 4-day-long holiday.

So while some people may want to stay in Singapore and enjoy the fireworks, others may want to jump at the opportunity to get away without having to take days off work. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of these travel dates, airfare for popular destinations is going to cost more than usual.

So where should you go if you want an affordable getaway? Using data from Kayak, we found the 5 cheapest destinations for the National Day/Hari Raya Haji weekend.

Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta, Indonesia (Thousand Islands)

The cheapest destination for the National Day long weekend is Jakarta. With flights as low as S$221, it can be a good choice for travellers looking for a metropolitan getaway or who want to use Jakarta as a stopover to get to Thousand Islands, Ujung Kulon National Park or the Mekarsari Fruit and Recreation Park.

For travellers looking to get to one of the Thousand Islands, the closest option from Jakarta’s Ancol Marina Port is Pulau Bidadari. Other options include Pulau Ayer and Pulau Pari. Jakarta can also be an interesting place for families, since there are plenty of museums, such as the Museum Nasional, and the amusement park, Ancol Dreamland.

You can also travel to Pulau Pramuka to partake in water activities and see the island’s protected turtle population.

This table shows the lowest found airfare and average cost of accommodations and activities in Jakarta

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is one of the most popular destinations for Singaporeans year-round, and for good reason. There are plenty of things to do for travellers of all types, whether it’s shopping at Central Market or exploring hidden waterfalls during a trek through the jungle. Even if this won’t be your first time in Kuala Lumpur, you can still find new things to explore.

For instance, you can consider exploring the KL Forest Eco Park, make your own pewter item at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, learn about the Mah Meri tribe in Pulau Carey, and enjoy the deer at the Deer Park in Perdana Botanical Garden.

You also don’t have to stay in Kuala Lumpur. About an hour’s drive away lies a serene fishing village, Sekinchan. It’s rarely frequented by tourists but offers breathtaking vistas.

This table shows the lowest found airfare and average cost of accommodations and activities in Kuala Lumpur

Kuching, Malaysia

Kuching, Malaysia

Kuching is the next most affordable cheapest flight on our list and can be a good option for travellers looking to surround themselves with nature. Some of the most popular activities are river kayaking on the Upper Sarawak River, taking a wildlife tour to see orangutans and hiking. You should consider comparing and booking your activities in advance as some companies offer 50% discounts for children under 12.

If you want to explore Kuching, you can explore its Main Bazaar, check out the Orchid Gardens, relax at Damai Beach or take a stroll through Kuching’s charming historical streets.

While airfare costs more than it typically would during non-holiday days, the hotels are affordable enough to still keep the trip within budget. As an aside, if you will be participating in any adventurous activities, then it is worth getting a travel insurance policy that covers injuries relating to those activities to avoid paying costly medical bills out of pocket.

This table shows the lowest found airfare and average cost of accommodations and activities in Kuching

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is another popular destination for Singaporeans. While most travellers have already visited popular sites like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, there are still plenty of new things to do in Bangkok. For instance, travellers interested in forensic macabre can check out the Siriraj Medical Museum (nicknamed the Museum of Death). A lighter activity can be a walk through Pak Khlong Talad, which is Bangkok’s largest flower market.

To learn more about Thai culture, you can go to the Artist’s House (Baan Silapin). There, you can see a traditional puppetry show and explore art galleries. If you have extra time, you can take the three hour trip to Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has a plethora of hiking trails.

This table shows the lowest found airfare and average cost of accommodations and activities in Bangkok

Makassar, Indonesia

Makassar, Indonesia

Makassar can be a good destination for travellers who are itching for a new adventure and want to get away from traditional tourist destinations. Rarely visited by tourists, Makassar is a colonial town that was an important trading post for the Dutch in the 17th century.

Foodie travellers can enjoy quality seafood restaurants on Losari Beach Promenade that also offers gorgeous sunset views that makes the promenade so popular with locals. Those interested in visiting about Indonesia’s history during their Dutch rule can visit For Rotterdam.

You can also visit Rammang-Rammang by way of a canoe, where you can take a walk through the picturesque Berua village. Snorkelers and scuba divers can practice in Pulau Samalona, which is only a 45-minute boat ride from Makassar.

This table shows the lowest found airfare and average cost of accommodations and activities in Makassar

How to Keep Costs Low During Peak Travel Times

Since airfare can be one of the costliest parts of a holiday, it can be disheartening to see such high prices to destinations that are typically very affordable. However, there are ways to reduce the amount you’ll pay for airfare.

First, you can set up a tracker for your destination. For example, sites like Kayak will tell you when the airfare for your destination is going to increase or decrease. Once you find a price you are comfortable with, you can see if you have enough points on your air miles credit card to offset some of the airfare cost.

For accommodations, you can book directly with hotels since some hotels offer a discount on rooms booked through their site. Alternatively, you can compare prices on travel aggregators and look for flash sales on accommodations at your destination. In some cases, you can score deals for as low as 70% off the original price.

Disclaimer

Please note that the lowest airfare listed here is for the travel dates 09/08/2019-12/08/2019 and is subject to change.

Thailand McDonald’s is Having Salted Egg Shaker Fries & Salted Caramel Sundae

If you’re a typical young Singaporean, chances are you’ll like these two things.

Travelling.

But like any other young Singaporean, you can’t afford anywhere outside of Asia. So Thailand is one of your favourites, yeah?

Salted Egg.

Image: Jia Yuen Eating House Facebook Page

You love anything salted egg, don’t you? Salted egg chicken, crab, burger, chips, and many more.

Well, I’ve got some good news for you.

The Land of Smiles has just prepared one more reason to send you flying over there once more.

Salted Egg Shaker Fries

If you like shaker fries and grab them at McDonald’s at every opportunity, you’ll love this news.

Unfortunately seemingly a Thailand-exclusive, McDonald’s is releasing an all-new shaker fries that will cause every Instagram teen to salivate uncontrollably.

Posted by McDonald's on Sunday, 21 July 2019

No caption translation this time, sorry, I don’t speak Thai. The Facebook translation function is your best bet.

With the M size at 59 baht (~2.63 SGD) and the XL size at 79 baht (~3.52 SGD), the prices are pretty similar to Singapore’s.

However, if you’re over at Bangkok and want to try something new, why not?

But if you do make a trip there, you might want more than just the salted egg shaker fries to try.

Salted Caramel Sundae & McFlurry

While not a Thailand exclusive, you may enjoy the salted buddy of salted egg that many SG youngsters love.

For those who can’t decide between sweet and salted food (like me), salted caramel is a heaven-sent gift.

And I can’t appreciate enough how well ice cream brings out its flavour.

Based on the images, it appears that the McFlurry costs 32 baht (~1.43 SGD) while the sundae costs 29 baht (~1.29 SGD).

Are you salivating yet? I am.

Still, no one’s crazy enough to book a flight to Thailand just for some McDonald’s snacks, right?

Right…?

Where are you going?

On a side note, McDonald’s Singapore, can you bring this over?

10 Tips to Ensure a Safe Hotel Stay in Any Country

You’ve just planned the trip of the year with your BFFs. Things are pretty exciting, except for the small niggling fact that you’re in an unknown place and feel the constant need to be on the lookout for pick-pockets and snatch thieves.

It’s completely understandable. In fact, if you think about it, the one place you think you can possibly leave your guard down is the hotel.

No can do.

You’ll have to be on you’re A-game at all times, and this means being vigilant during your hotel stay too. Here are 10 tips you might find handy while you’re hanging out in the hotel!

Keep a Constant Eye On Your Bags

Image: Anna Baburkina / Shutterstock.com

Yes, this starts from the time you reach the reception desk. There’s going to be tons of people walking up and about, and you’ll be busy filling up a form and paying the room deposit. Ensure your luggage is always within reach!

Sure, You Can Use the Bellhop, But…

Image: NotionPic / Shutterstock.com

Well, if you’re using the services of the bellhop, ensure it’s the actual staff you’re working with and not an imposter without a uniform. Always get a tag for your baggage with the number of bags noted down on it.

Keep The Hotel’s Business Cards With You

Image: SFIO CRACHO / Shutterstock.com

This comes in handy, simply because if there’s an emergency and you lose your belongings (keep the card on your person ya), you’ll have an address to show as proof of where you’re lodging at. It is also helpful if you’re lost and need to find the way back to the hotel.

Put in A Request for a Room That’s Not on the Ground Floor

Image: fizkes / Shutterstock.com

Thieves tend to pick the ground floor the most to hit, so you’ll limit your chances of getting robbed simply by asking for a higher floor. Unless, that is, Spider-man changed his job.

Lock Up Your Essentials

Image: jannoon028 / Shutterstock.com

Keep all your jewelry, cash and ID in the safe deposit box so you know it’s safe while you sleep at night. And if they don’t have one at your room…

Use the Front Desk Safe Deposit Box

Image: Olena Yakobchuk / Shutterstock.com

If your room doesn’t come with its own personal lock and key safe, there’s almost definitely one at the reception desk. Get yours and secure your items there. But as usual, if possible, keep the most important things with you instead.

Lock Everything When You Step Out

Yes, including the sliding doors, windows and duh, the front door! Do look out for openings that didn’t look like one, or a window that is hidden behind something.

Prevent Credit Card Fraud

Image: dean bertoncel/ Shutterstock.com

There are some simple steps you can do to ensure this. For one, check that you’ve been handed back the same card you gave when your transaction is completed. You don’t want to find you’ve had multiple unknown bills charged to you when you’re back from your holiday now, right?

Keep the Door Ajar When There’s Hotel Staff Within Your Room

Image: Dmitry Bakulov / Shutterstock.com

Yes, this will keep you from any unexpected accusations of improper behaviour or anything else. Being blackmailed isn’t what you’d want. It certainly doesn’t hurt to be extra cautious!

Check Your Room Before Moving In Completely

The door for its deadbolts and locks especially, and the safety deposit box if there’s one in your room. Just check it like how you check out girls / guys.

10 Money-Saving Tips For Your Trips According to a Backpacker

$
0
0

While I was having lunch with my colleagues, someone casually asked if any of us are planning to go on a holiday trip anytime soon.

…and 5 minutes into the conversation, we were all talking about our travel budgets and how expensive plane tickets are these days. The conversation then kinda went something like this:

(Unsurprisingly, most young people these days fall into the last category)

It was there and then I realized that I am the only backpacker amongst my colleagues, and boy—were they shocked to find out that I only spent about $500 for my trip around Southeast Asia.

(Since for most of them, $500 is easily the amount of money spent on hotels and souvenirs alone)

As such, I thought it might be interesting for me to talk about some backpacking stuff—you know, maybe explain how I managed to save money on my trips!

(Warning: Backpacking is a lifestyle, and it is definitely not for everyone! This guide is not for people who would prefer to splurge and enjoy your holidays. If you can pay for it and is willing to, by all means, go ahead. )

1) Hostels and guesthouses

Instead of going to a fancy hotel with gigantic bathroom, why not consider hostels and guesthouses? Heck, even a no-frills hotel would help you save a ton of money!

Money saved on lodgings can go a long, long way.

I may be biased here, but I love hostels and guesthouses. These are places where people from all over the world can interact with each other and make friends! Not to mention that hostels and guesthouses are generally cheaper than hotels too!

2) Cabs and Taxis

I really can’t stress this enough. Avoid taking cabs wherever possible and you’ll see yourself saving a significant amount of money!

If you absolutely have to, consider asking around the hostel/guesthouse you’re staying at! Perhaps some people are going in the same direction as you are!

Image: channelnewsasia.com

Maybe they will even join you on your trip and you’ll make a lifelong friend!

3) Eat like a local

Local food is the gateway to understanding a culture and an excuse for a glutton like me to pig-out.

And perhaps more importantly, it’s the perfect way for the traveller who is on a tight budget to save on food.

Avoid cafes and fanciful restaurants and you’ll do pretty well on your budget! Personally, I find eating street food to be one of the greatest pleasures in life. However, please ensure that you have a decently strong stomach before doing that. Traveller’s diarrhea is no joke.

4) Shared tours

So, some tours actually function like this. The more people you have on the tour, the cheaper the tour becomes. Hence, it’s always a good idea to travel in a group!

Or if you’re a solo traveller, as always, ask around for people who are interested in the tour if you’re staying in a hostel or guesthouse!

That being said, I still prefer travelling without a tour group, which brings me to my next point

5) Off the beaten path

Tired of seeing what everyone else’s been seeing? Or do you simply not wish to deal with street hawkers any longer?

In that case, rent a bike and ride off into the sunset—away from the tourist traps and obnoxious tourists.

Who knows? You might just be surprised with what you see at the end of the route!

6) Flight dates Flexibility

Oh yes, it’s no secret that flights are a big part of your expenditure when you’re flying overseas(unless you’re travelling from Singapore to China on a train like what I did).

Hence it would be ideal for us to save as much as we can on flights.

Image: jetstar.com

I know, I know. Not everyone’s got the luxury of flexible flight dates considering our available leave days and all. However, if you are able to, you’ll see yourself saving a significant sum of money when you choose to fly on “bad” travelling dates like a Tuesday!

7) No souvenirs

I never really understood the concept of souvenirs. Many years ago, before the age of the internet, a souvenir was a nice little gesture. However, with the appearance of budget flights and the popularisation of online shopping, there are really little reasons for anyone to buy souvenirs anymore.

Unless you’re buying it for, say, your grandma who’s too old to travel and has no internet skills, then I think it’s okay.

As for the young people, please don’t waste your friend’s time by telling him/her to buy something back for you either. Import it by yourself if you really want it.

8) Keep your body fit

It goes without saying that a healthy body helps a lot when you’re travelling, especially when you’re backpacking.

I don’t exactly have the fittest body(fine, I’m actually overweight), but I can walk for miles and miles without stopping as long as there’s no running involved. At the end of the day, it’s about conditioning your body for the trip!

This way, you can also save on transport costs and medical bills should you fall sick overseas!

9) Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate

Okay, I’m actually pretty bad at this. My bargaining skills are as good as non-existent. If a shirt is worth $5, it’ll probably become $7 after my bargaining attempt.

Image: mymemes.biz

But hey, if you’re good enough, the store owner might just give you the shirt for free and throw in a couple dollars for your ride back to your hostel.

Image: knowyourmeme.com

10) Mind the exchange rate

If you’re one of those people who tend to overspend or underestimate the expenditure needed in a country, be mindful when you’re planning to exchange money at money changers.

Always pay attention to the exchange rate and do not accept any amount that’s less than desirable. There are places which value high denomination notes more than loose change. As such, expect better exchange rates for your $100 bills!

Oh and, remember to count the money before leaving and keep the money somewhere safe!

With all that being said, the easiest way to save money for a trip is to control your spending. Always remember that your needs should come before your wants! The money you save today might just become the ticket money for your next flight!

8 Useful Tips and Tricks to Visiting Bali Every Singaporean Must Know

$

Bali is an awesome place to travel to. It’s a beautiful place and has plenty of excitement for that adventurous soul in us all.

That’s if you’ve done your research right. Here are eight things you need to know before travelling to Bali, or you’ll spoil your holiday.

1. The Best Time to Visit

When we were still studying, we can’t really pick the time to travel because, well, we can only travel on our holidays. But things are different now if you’re working because you can choose when to take your annual leave and get onto a plane.

Image: Vixit / Shutterstock.com
Image: Vixit / Shutterstock.com

The dry season for this idyllic paradise is from May to September and the peak period is during July and August.

So if you want to save on as much as possible yet still enjoy the sunny weather the island is known for, travel in May, June or September. Not only do you have lesser crowds to fight through, you’ll get to enjoy up to 50% off your accommodations. Not a bad deal, right?

2. The Best Places for First-Timers to Visit

Okay, if Bali is your second home, you can skip this point. However, if this is your first, or first few times, to the island and you don’t speak Bahasa, stick to South or Central Bali which are more tourist-friendly and more exciting.

  • Kuta is known for its amazing nightlife and shopping.
  • Seminyak is known for its beautiful beach and water sports.
  • Uluwatu is known for its amazing cliff top sunset view and surfing.
  • Jimbaran is known for living the high life – 5-star hotels, fine dining and lobsters.
  • Ubud is the art capitol of Bali.

3. Staying in Bali

There are four different kinds of stays available to the tourist in Bali. You can either choose homestays (check out AirBnB), hostels (check out Hostelworld), hotels (Agoda, Booking.com) or Villas (Agoda, Booking.com, AirBnB, Villas.com).

And don’t start looking for a hotel when you’re there. Start looking through the websites mentioned above and check out the reviews before coming to a decision.

4. Activities in Bali

Most people make the mistake of assuming Bali to be all sunny beaches, suntan and partying but there’s more to Bali than you think.

Pick up artistic souvenirs at the Sukawati Art Market.

Image: baleudang.com
Image: baleudang.com

Alternatively, do a bit of shopping for high fashion apparels from places like Blue Glue which sells incredibly sexy bikinis or Bamboo Blonds for something more playful.

Image: bali.com
Image: bali.com

Be sure to hit up at least one temple before you leave because they’re sensational.

5. Food you cannot miss in Bali

If you’re visiting the island, here are some foods you really cannot miss while you’re there.

6. Currency Exchange

If you have the chance, exchange your currency in Singapore because the exchange rates are better here.

However, if you’ve not exchanged for Indonesian money before your trip, make sure not to exchange your entire stash at the airport’s money changer. The rates they give are usually meh.

Instead, change just enough to take a cab out of the airport and only exchange the rest at an authorised money changer outside the airport. And never exchange money at unauthorised money changers because chances are, they’ll shortchange you.

7. Things You Definitely Bring to Bali with You

While things are pretty cheap in Bali (sometimes), it’s best to bring whatever you can with you to save yourself the hassle of running about.

Here are some essential items you must never forget to bring for the trip: Suntan lotion, Insect repellent, International Adaptor because Bali uses power points with different sockets from Singapore, and flipflops.

8. Transport around the island

There are a couple of ways you can travel around the island. Unless you’re looking to splurge and hire a car for yourself, you’ll have to travel like us commoners.

Image: villa-bali.com
Image: villa-bali.com

For taxis, Bluebird taxis are the most reliable although you have to make sure the meter is running. Also, do note that not all blue taxis are Bluebird taxis.

Alternatively, you can take the Kura-kura buses which also travel to main areas across the island.

There’s A Bubble Tea Pop-up ‘Theme Park’ In Japan Until 16 Sep 2019

If I asked you how much you love bubble tea, you’d probably say, “I love it so much I want to swim in it”.

Well, now you actually can swim in it.

Literally.

But before that, maybe you can check out a video we’ve done about bubble tea first, because why not?

Done? Moving on…

Tokyo Tapioca Land

Here’s the ticket: there’s now a pop-up bubble tea theme park in Japan.

If you’re picturing water slides into a huge pool of Taro milk tea, well, that’s not exactly it. It’s less like a traditional theme park and more like a festival.

What’s its name? Tokyo Tapioca Land, of course.

While that sounds like a squishy, tasty island, it’s actually an Instagram-worthy festival full of bubble-tea-related paraphernalia. Remember when I said you could swim in bubble tea?

Come aboard the “tapioca ride”.

Image: Twitter (kumamoto_marina)

OK, so it’s basically a ball pit. But how many bubble-tea ball pits have you been in?

Tokyo Tapioca Land also has F&B stalls, ten photo spots, and celebrity ambassadors. And, of course, bubble tea.

Image: Instagram (mchanx96)

What exactly do swings and trolleys have to do with bubble tea? We’re not sure.

But if you’ve ever felt unsatisfied with the lack of trolleys and swings in the area while you were having a bubble tea, then Tokyo Tapioca Land is the place for you.

If you’re heading to Japan and thinking of visiting the festival, pre-sale tickets have sold out, but regular tickets are still available at 1,200 yen (S$15.60).

The festival is in front of the Harajuku station and will last till September 16, 2019.

Image: Twitter (tapioca_land)

But, much like the bubble-tea-shop queues in Singapore, this bubble tea theme park looks crowded AF.

Image: Twitter (tapioca_land)

Is it worth going? Well, if you’re not interested in taking pictures for the gram, you could always try out their bubble tea.

A bubble-tea festival must have amazing bubble tea, right?

Open: 13 August 19 to 16 September 19
August hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. (last order 6:45)
September hours: 1 p.m.-7 p.m. (weekdays), 10 a.m.-7 p.m. (weekends) (last order 6:45)

10 Foods You Must Makan in Jakarta Other Than Ayam Penyet

$

Are you planning a trip to Jakarta soon? If you are, here’s a list of food you definitely can’t miss out on while you’re there.

If you aren’t, this list might just change your mind and you’ll soon be finding yourself going on a short food trip to Jakarta.

1. Bakso

Image: goasean.com

Bakso is the local rendition of juicy meatballs served in a flavourful broth, topped with noodles and vegetables. While bakso is typically made from beef, chicken and fish are also popular options in creating the meatballs. Do try all different types of bakso if you wish to!

2. Gado Gado

Image: goasean.com

I’m sure many countries have their own versions of salad and here’s the Indonesian take on it. Made up of boiled vegetables, tofu, tempeh, hard-boiled eggs and even pieces of lontong or rice cakes, it is then topped with a unique dressing of peanut sauce which brings out the flavour of Indonesian delicacies.

3. Sop Buntut

Image: sethlui.com

If you have to eat Bak Kut Teh in Singapore, then you have to eat Sop Buntut, otherwise known as oxtail soup, in Jakarta. It is a well-known comfort food to the people of Indonesia and it can definitely lift your spirits with just a spoonful of its savoury and flavorful soup which is cooked using various spices, herbs and vegetables.

4. Sate

Image: goasean.com

Yes, this is the satay that we are all very familiar with but it is still a must-try when you’re in Jakarta and that just tells you how good it is. Apart from the typical spicy peanut sauce, don’t forget to check out the pineapple sauce as well. If you are the daring kind of foodie, do go ahead and try sate made with offal or intestines.

5. Es Teler

Image: bukumasakan.com

You didn’t think I was going to leave out a chilly dessert which fits in perfectly with the tropical temperature, did you? You can call this a dessert or you can call this a drink but it really doesn’t matter because it tastes heavenly. Like ice kachang in Singapore, cendol in Malaysia and bingsu in Korea, es teler is the icy dessert you have to eat in Jakarta.

6. Nasi Tumpeng

Image: tastecapade.com

First up, this is the food that is totally Instagram-worthy. What’s more is that you will have heaps of fun chomping down this dish because when else will you eat rice shaped like a cone?

The rice is actually yellow uduk rice which means it’s cooked in coconut milk, giving off an aroma like no other. The colourful array of side dishes which may vary depending on the chef also helps to enhance your appetite. Not to mention, this dish is not just all about the looks but the taste is of high quality as well.

7. Pisang Goreng Sambal Roa

Image: sethlui.com

Well, most of us should be familiar with fried banana fritters but what about having this sweet snack with some spicy chilli? Try it out for yourself.

8. Soto Mie

Image: sethui.com

Before you think Jakarta is all about rice and sweets, here’s a bowl of noodles to satisfy your palate. As we should know by now, Indonesian soups and broths are delicious and soto mie is basically noodles in soup and the flavour depends on the kind of broth and toppings. Still, don’t miss having this dish popular with the locals.

9. Kerak Telor

Image: tastecapade.com

This might just look like any omelette you can fry yourself but trust me, it is not your average egg. This is made from glutinous rice fried with duck eggs which have a richer taste to it than chicken eggs. It is then eaten together with shredded coconut, fried shallots and fried shrimps.

10. Ketoprak

Image: tastecapade.com

A very typical and popular street food, the main ingredients for Ketoprak are lontong, tofu, beehoon, bean sprouts, boiled egg and cabbage. The sauce is once again the very iconic peanut sauce and the whole dish is complemented with fried shallots and rice crackers.

Travelling is one of the topmost important things to do for Singaporeans.

And can you blame us?

I mean, with how sensitive Singaporeans are and how fast-paced our society is, who wouldn’t want a holiday or two to get away from the madness.

Well, before you travel, there is always something that you hate to do: packing!

Let us offer you a list of things that you can buy from Daiso because where else can you get stuff that’s good and cheap?

1. Multi-purpose Storage Bags

Image: Tripzilla

These storage bags come in different shapes and sizes. The small ones are the best because you can easily put your safety pins, small bottled perfumes, contact lens casing, or even your keys to keep them safe and accessible.

2. Vacuum sealed storage bags

This is the one thing you MUST buy in Daiso for your packing needs. These inventions save you tons of space by compressing all the air out of the bag when you pack your clothes, slippers, and other necessities.

You will be amazed at how much more space you have in your bag after sucking all the air out of your storage bags. Bring a few of these along with you and do the same to all the new clothes that you have to buy on the trip.

Small bottles

Image: Wrong Way Gang

Small bottles are very useful if you have no travel size shampoo, shower foam, etc. You can pick the ones that you like.

Daiso carries various kinds of bottles such as the squeeze bottles, spray bottles, screw cap bottles, etc.

Image: ChinaHao

These are also sold in Watsons and Japan Home, but Daiso is cheaper.

Multi-purpose containers

Image: Pinterest

Most people will associate such containers as pillboxes. Think out of the box, for you can also put other small accessories into these boxes.

Earrings, wedding bands, engagement rings and small fashion accessories can all go into these boxes and the items will have a safe haven to rest in when you remove them after a long day out.

Waterproof Travel Pouch

Buy one of these to store all your toiletries so that they will not dirty the whole luggage even if they spill during the flight.

The pouch also keeps them clean from dirt and dust. Cosmetics can also be put into such a bag for your travels.

Flexible Bags

These are drawstring bags which are suited for anything. Daiso sells them to put your shoes and slippers in, but who says you have to follow the instruction.

You can choose to put your socks into the bag, or even a book or two to keep them from getting folded during the flight.

Bring one or two of them along too for you will find that they come in handy when you are looking for a carrier for small items.

Dial Locks

Image: Carousell

These are simple to use and there is no need for you to worry about where you should put the small keys that come with travel locks.

These locks are also pretty with different designs and colours.

Heat Packs

Image: Carousell

If you are travelling to a country with cold weather, you can buy the heat packs from Daiso.

They are not as effective as those you can find in travel stores, but they are warm enough for your hands and feet and is very safe to hold in your hands.

Inflatable pillows

Image: Dayre

These are good to keep you from a stiff neck after snoozing on the flight. Cheap and reliable, these pillows can be inflated easily and then deflated when not in use.

They save you a lot of space in the luggage and will not frustrate you with their bulkiness during your travel.

Eye Mask and Earplugs

The earplugs are useful when you have a snoring travel partner or if you’re an extremely light sleeper.

The eye mask, on the other hand, blocks out the light and helps you to get some sleep on the flight and in your hotel room

Body Sheets

Image: Women’s Weekly

These are definitely worth lugging along during your travels as they refresh you on a hot and humid day. The body sheets clean much of your dirt and sweat off your body when you are hot and sticky with the summer heat.

It will provide you with the much needed cool relief when you need it most.

Raincoat

Image: Carousell

It is a lot more space-friendly than an umbrella when you are packing for a vacation.

It is always good to assume that it will rain when you least expect it. Hence, it is a good idea to bring one along with you, just in case.

True, you can get a raincoat overseas at tourists attractions, but at $2? Nope.

Small Torchlight

You never know when you will need a little help from this buddy here. When you travel, it is safer to bring a torchlight along so that you can use it when necessary.

While it might not be necessary to use it for lighting purposes, it works very well to prevent a robbery by shining a torchlight into your attacker’s eyes.

Mini Electric Fan

This gadget is useful if you are going to a hot place. When it is hot and humid, a fan of any kind is a blessing. An electric one is even more appreciated as there is no need for you to expend energy to get wind through traditional methods.

Travel Wallets

While these are less popular, it is very useful to people who want to keep their different currency separated. However, it is wiser to keep this wallet away from public eyes while you are overseas, especially if you have a lot of cash on you.

Always bring just enough for your day and keep the rest of the money safely lock up in the hotel safe. Now that you have the list, start shopping at Daiso for your next trip out of Singapore!

The Most Underrated &‘Hidden’ Mall in JB: AEON Bukit Indah

Are you like sick and tired of City Square and KSL? Because if you do, and still insist on going up north to JB, here’s one mall that you should be going this weekend instead.

It’s because this mall is relatively “hidden” and underrated, not that it’s not as good as the other JB malls, though.

Faster

The best way of getting there is through Tuas Checkpoint (about a 30-minute drive) compared to through Woodlands Checkpoint (about 46-minute drive).

We all know that accessing JB through the second link is much much faster because there are lesser cars going in and out there.

So if you don’t want to get stuck in horrible jams just to get to Komtar, go to AEON instead.

The entire journey to the mall, after you’ve passed the custom, is mainly highway driving, so you won’t need to brake and move a few thousand times before reaching the mall, until KSL or City Square.

Image: Google Maps

Padini Concept Store & Brands Outlet

These are the first few stores I entered during my visit to the mall. Bought some shirts and jeans because they were just so affordable (I haven’t even included the 3 is to 1 thingy!).

But what’s the difference between this outlet and the other outlets? The one in AEON Bukit Indah is more spacious and less crowded. The light shines in and won’t leave you feeling suffocated.

A&W

Image: newbedfordguide.com

Ah, novelty fast food to some Singaporeans, and nostalgic food for many Singaporeans.

You don’t have to travel so far up Malaysia or even Batam just to get a taste of that rootbeer float and fried chicken.

And you can argue that Jewel Changi and AMK Hub has A&W too. Except for the westies, Aeon Bukit Indah is actually nearer and less crowded.

Daiso

daiso
Image: myaddelaa.blogspot.com

What’s the big deal, you might ask. Well, Singapore has several outlets but the one in Bukit Indah will give you a different atmosphere.

Gone are the sparkly bright interior and pink neon signage like those found in Singapore.

The Daiso there sells things at RM5.90, which isn’t any cheaper than Singapore but hey: it’s Daiso. They’re already cheap, my friend.

Legoland Malaysia

legoland
Image: legoland.com.my

The mall is also near to the family-oriented tourist attraction. So if you are planning a visit to Legoland, head over to AEON for lunch, away from the bustle of the theme park. And as always, book a Grab or Uber and you won’t be crying over expensive taxi fares.

Shophouses

I never knew the existence of these shophouses until someone in the office mentioned it. Apparently, these shophouses have good food stalls and massage houses that are worth the visit.

A body scrub at Huang Zu Xuan will cost you RM35 and a 90-minute aromatherapy massage will only set you back RM105.

GIF: Giphy.com

The shophouses are just across the mall, so if you’re eyeing some hawker food instead, you know where to go for your meal!

No. 8, Jalan Indah 15/2,, Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Takzim.

Taipei Cafe MrRdrinks Serves Coffee With Super Cute Shiba Inu On Top

Dogs are cute, right?

This is a rhetorical question by the way.

To be more specific, Shiba Inu’s are adorable. What better way to start your day off with by seeing something like this?

Shibai Inu In a Cup

Image: Nylon Singapore

Help, how come I feel like drinking this would only ruin it?

Why do I feel like petting it?

My fawning aside, that is an actual image of a Shiba Inu-shaped marshmallow sitting on a fluffy drink.

Image: PopSugar

They popped up on the menu of MrRdrinks, a cafe in Taipei around November 2017.

And the best part? They come in varying colours and designs!

You can choose between a pink, black or brown Shiba Inu to sit on your drink. You can even choose a rose or Sakura to represent the season. My pick is still the dog though.

Image: Get Leashed Magazine

The thickness of the froth and the chubbiness of the sleeping dog somehow make for an extremely peaceful image.

Shame that we have to drink it.

Image: Instagram

This one above is my personal favourite.

It is a pretty small cafe though. According to local food bloggers, only one person runs it, so you have to wait a bit.

Honestly? Seems worth it.

And if you’re worried that it’ll sell out, don’t worry.

Limited Quantity

Image: eatlovephoto

These drinks are limited to one per person so please do not be greedy or cheat the system.

Each cup is also $6-$8, not the cheapest so watch your wallets.

The big question I know will be asked is, “Eh, I’m in Taiwan how to go there?!”

Relax, we got you. (and me, I want one too!)

MrRdrinks: 雨田先生手沖飲品吧

  • Address: No. 69, Lane 223, Section 4, Zhongxiao East Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
  • Opening hours:
    • Mon-Fri: 7.30am-7pm
    • Sat, Sun & public holidays: 10am-7pm
  • Nearest train station: Zhongxiao Dunhua or Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall

If you’re like me, you love travelling but hate spending money. We want to visit beautiful places far, far away but our bank balances won’t let us.

Well, what if I said you could experience true natural beauty without breaking the bank?

Here are eight Instagram-worthy places in JB that’ll give you a taste of Europe:

1. RIDERS LODGE RESORT

While this looks like a majestic manor in the English Countryside, it’s actually a resort in the Malaysian town of Kulai.

Take an early morning walk along lush lawns and observe horses grazing in the verdant fields for a relaxing experience of nature.

You can even learn to ride a horse or join guided trails into a tropical plantation.

Address: Inside the Legends Golf and Country Resort, Lot 1302 Kebun Sedenak, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia

2. UK FARM AGRO RESORT

Want to experience the farm life? Head down to UK Farm Agro Resort, just a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Singapore.

Sip your morning coffee while watching these sheep and goats roam about the vast green fields.

And if you’re looking for the perfect Instagram picture, well, you’re not going to get a more picturesque backdrop than this lavender field.

Address: Plot 8, Project Pertanian Moden Kluang, KM13 Jalan Batu Pahat, 86000 Kluang, Johor, Malaysia

3.MOUNT AUSTIN

Also known as the little Paris of Johor Bahru, Mount Austin is filled with charming cafes inspired by the street cafes in Paris.

Visit Tropique Café & Restauranta Wes-Anderson-inspired cafe with numerous spots for that perfect Instagram picture.

Or you could visit Cafe de Flore, named after a popular French coffeehouse. Its white exterior is adorned with flowers and leaves, great for photo ops and a steaming cup of joe.

Getting to Mount Austin: Hop on a 20-minute cab ride after crossing Malaysian customs.

4. CANOPY TRIBES

If you’re an outdoors person who loves sleeping amongst the trees and waking up to insects crawling down your pants, then you should head to Canopy Tribes.

You can experience ‘glamping’, which is basically glamorous camping.

Or enjoy sweet slumber on nature’s bed.

There are also outdoor activities like hiking and barbecues for visitors.

Address: 7815, Jln Lombong, Batu 8, 81900 Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia

5. KOTA TINGGI FIREFLY PARK

While you’re at the Canopy Tribes, head over to the Kota Tinggi Firefly Park and take the river cruise where you can watch fireflies light up the trees in the dark of night.

A pretty good place to propose too.

Address: Jalan Kota Tinggi, 81900 Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia

6. GUNUNG LEDANG (MOUNT OPHIR)

You can also climb up the highest mountain in Johor, Gunung Ledang.

Get there early so you can catch the glorious sunrise at the peak of the mountain.

You may even be able to touch the clouds if you’re lucky.

You’ll have to register with the national park first, though, because the government has restricted the number of people allowed to trek up each day.

Getting there: It takes about two and a half hours to travel from Singapore. Take a bus to Gunung Ledang via Tangkak, and another bus to Gunung Ledang National Park.

7. RAWA ISLAND

And of course, no travel list would be complete without a scenic beach with white sand and clear blue waters.

In addition to being a lovely place to relax, Rawa Island has two resorts. You can literally jump into the sea from your doorstep.

You can also go for a short hike up the Hilltop Jungle Tracking, where a magnificent view of the surrounding islands in Mersing awaits at the peak.

Getting there: Take a three-hour coach ride from Singapore to Mersing jetting, then take a ferry to Rawa Island.

8. TASIK BIRU, KANGKAR PULAI (BLUE LAKE SERI ALAM)

You can also visit an abandoned granite quarry in Johor.

It looks like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie and is great for photo ops.

If you head a little deeper, you’ll see this gorgeous blue lake in this mini canyon.

10 Beautiful Places in Asia that You Need To See Before You Die

$
0
0

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. You’ve probably heard this saying. Or, The brevity of life illustrates itself in whether you can get up the next morning.

That wasn’t my saying. Some wise sage did. Jog my memory, please.

While still alive and kicking, or shall we say in millennial speak, YOLO!, why not set foot on some distant lands so that you may let out your breath much bated by dizzying-paced local corporate life and work?

Ready to let out that bated breath in wonder and contented sighs?

Here goes: 10 Beautiful Places in Asia that You Need To See Before You Die

1. Georgetown, Penang.

My mother’s mother’s land. Get you a cendol for solving that riddle!

Image: Nitsawan Katerattanakul / Shutterstock.com

Sphinxes aside, Georgetown, the capital city of Penang, is Malaysian’s second-largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once a British-colonized entity, it is located at the north-eastern tip of Penang Island.

Georgetown’s signature vintage, time-old shophouses and buildings are its main attractions (some British-influenced).

They’re complemented by the timeless hands of artists – noteworthy one Ernest Zacharevic – who has painted (giant) murals into the island’s various facades.

The expat’s backpacking life is also rife there; you can hear ten different languages anytime!

Get yourself a beer and stay at any of the “Westernized” inns or choose to walk the city and explore its various timeworn nooks and crannies. Take selfies with the various murals once you have discovered them.

Alternatively, Penang Hill is nearby should you desire to be nearer to nature.

Take a steep, slow ride to the top via its Penang Hill Railway, a two-way funicular train.

Pop 2 ringgit into any of the binoculars on top of the hill and be kings and queens of the Hill!

2. Jomalig Island, Philippines

Image: John Michael San Jose / Shutterstock.com

Forget Boracay. Though beautiful as most of the Philippines’ well-known beaches are, nothing compares to the raw sand-and-turquoise-hued splendour found almost exclusively on Jomalig Island.

A less-known secret paradise isolated in the easternmost part of Polilio Group, Jomalig (pronounced “humalig”) is one of the least populated municipalities in the Quezon province.

Home to exquisite sunsets, more primitive kampung life, friendlier-than-city-locals and more, Jomalig is the perfect getaway for camping, snorkelling, diving, boating… and not to mention, breathing in air pure and free from urban traffic.

Getting there is already a 10-hour land-and-sea adventure by itself, so check out this sanguine, neat and perfectly solitary getaway with your loved one(s) if you ever tire of city life!

3. Taj Mahal, India

Image: Yury Taranik / Shutterstock.com

Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his favourite wife (who died during childbirth) in the 1600s, the Taj Mahal is a magnificent testament to the prowess of architecture and a daily visual fiesta for the 1.2 million people of modern Agra.

Dubbed the Seventh Wonder of the World, this exquisite white marble mausoleum in the city of Agra, India is UNESC-certified and protected.

While you are there, besides letting your breath wisp away in the hidden details that make the palace beautiful, why not Google the story of why Taj Mahal was built, and marvel both at the breathtaking visual depth of human architecture, and the equally visceral depths of the powers of love.

Emperor Shah Jahan certainly has left behind more than a memento for the people of the later centuries, a stark reminder that the human heart can span beyond the frameworks of the universe.

4. Bali, Indonesia

Image: DavideAngelini / Shutterstock.com

Reportedly one of the favourite vacation-destinations of Singaporeans, this “generic” stay-place has few places left untouched.

What it lacks in novelty, Bali seduces with a number of enchantments.

Known as the Land of the Gods, the deities have blessed the land with various (non-dangerous) volcanoes, lush beaches, and almost unheard of temples.

Hitting Bali for a quick staycation or prolonged adventurer’s exploration is both ideal – scuba diving, landscape trekking, temple-hunting, and cultural appreciation are perfect itineraries for this well-deserved holiday.

On a whispered note: don’t forget to try Bali coffee or visit the Tanah Lot “Sea” temple that nudges the boundaries between land and sea. The memories would come back and tease your daydreams back at work, I guarantee!

5. Bagan, Myanmar

Image: Natalia Golovina / Shutterstock.com

Speaking of temples, this one has a lot of them. Buddha’s memory is so revered by the native Burmese, they built well over 10,000 shrines in honour of Him.

Bagan spans along the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River and commands the sheer awe of 2,200 temples.

Constructed around the 11th to 13th centuries, these breathtaking pagodas are timeless testaments of the human edifice.

Be there for the sunsets or simply to undertake an odyssey of enlightenment to the sight of over 2,000 temples on a single plain!

After all, Monkey King Sun journeyed to the West. Now it’s your turn. Go cloud!

6. Bhutan

Image: Khanthachai C / Shutterstock.com

Quite “out of this world”, as stated by Forbes, Bhutan shows you some of the happiest citizens on earth.

If Thailand is the Land of Smiles, native Bhutanese probably touch the sun. Why so relevant to Singapore, you ask? Because we are one of the busiest, yet allegedly most unhappy people on planet earth!

Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom located on the Himalayas’ eastern ridge, is known for its colourful assortment of monasteries, dzongs and landscapes of subtropical plains, mountains and valleys.

Dubbed the “World’s Happiest Country” despite only being accessible by two aeroplanes, this vibrant Land of Deep Laughter is perhaps a lesson ready-made for our tiny red dot republic on the elusive art of being happy.

7. Halong Bay, Vietnam

Image: sanyanwuji / Shutterstock.com

Okay, enough of temples, temples, temples. Goody Feed is proud to bring you Halong Bay in Vietnam.

Located in northeast Vietnam, this famous bay is UNESCO-conserved and reputed for its emerald waters and thousands of towering, rainforest-topped limestone islands.

Ha Long means “descending dragon” in Viet (The Bay of Descending Dragons), which is a pretty apt name for the dragon-slew-coil of 1,600 limestone islands that dot the bay. Cruise and boat rides are a must to get around and about these waters and sightsee their curious islands (with names such as Teapot and Stone Dog isles).

For the more adventurous souls, you can spend your time lavishly there in scuba diving, hiking or rock climbing, planning an adventure around nature as effective as your company KPIs.

8. Krabi Province, Thailand

Image: Iakov Kalinin / Shutterstock.com

Not quite ready to go back to Singapore yet? How about a quick toss at the Krabi Province in Thailand? It has pristine sands and water that allegedly rival the Philippines (which even our own Ford Siloso Beach/Palawan Beach fall short of mirroring).

If solitude is your thing, then you’re highly in luck: Krabi boasts 154 islands for your island-hopping, beach-combing pleasure! Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi are top of the lists, followed by… the rest.

You decide.

It’s no wonder the poets sang their verses there.

9. Ifugao Rice Terraces, Philippines

Image: R.M. Nunes / Shutterstock.com

I must admit, rice terraces are pretty curious staircases to have. Layered over a mountainous landscape, it appears that a giant invisible god has been climbing (and irrigating) these steps.

The Ifugao Rice Terraces of the Philippines are no less a treat to the eyes as they are a retreat from technology-infused Singapore.

Occasionally dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World” (how many doth lay stake to that claim?!), the giant green steps were created by hand by overland migrants from Yunnan Province in China a few thousand years ago.

A thousand years later, the Ifugao region hence is now blessed with this miraculous sight, so why not be the next traveller to take a trek and feast your eyes?

10. MacRitchie Treetop Walk & Nature Park, Our Country

Image: Filipe.Lopes / Shutterstock.com

It would be unsporting of me not to end off with putting us back on our most endeared little red dot.

Staycations have been a trend of late and it doesn’t look like fading anytime soon.

So why not have a… ahem… trek-cation? MacRitchie Nature Trail is located beside MacRitchie Reservoir (Singapore’s largest reservoir) and anchored at the very heart of Singapore.

Water activities such as kayaking for the water enthusiasts and long treetop walks for the trekkers! While going at it, be sure to finally locate the ever-elusive Jelutong Tower that lies deeply entrenched within the trail.

This observation tower the height of 7 stories is constructed of wood and steel; the top allows you a ranging and uninterrupted view of nature all around the walk, including birds living in the vicinity (don’t blame me if you aren’t sharp-eyed!)

PS: I must admit it was a bunch of Filipino friends who introduced my lazy city-oriented ass to the lunging wonders of MacRitchie Trail.

Jelutong Tower stays in my mind because our group took 5 hours to explore the trail and ended up getting routed back to it! Essentially, lost.

Beautiful, eh?

10 Less-Travelled Destinations That S’poreans Can Consider for Their Year-End Vacation

$

Who doesn’t love to travel?

I for one know that I do. There’s nothing quite like packing your things (last minute, of course), hopping on a plane and going someplace far, far away.

It’s like one moment you’re in Singapore, and the next thing you know, you’ve slept, woken up and are in a whole other country!

To me, nothing is more thrilling and exhilarating than that.

So if you want to know what are the best and less-travelled destinations in 2019, read on.

And get your credit/debit cards ready – you’ll get major wanderlust and will want to book your tickets right away.

I don’t blame you. Me too.

1. Mauritius

Image: leoks / Shutterstock.com

Mauritius needs to be on your bucket list of places to travel to this year. A country on East Africa in the Indian Ocean, it is paradise.

With the bluest oceans, white beaches and an overall chilled out vibe, skip out on the traditional beach vacay destinations and make your way into this exotic haven.

Stay at one of the many beautiful villas and resorts if you can, or look up places on Airbnb.

They shouldn’t cost too much, too. Spend your days taking incredible photographs of the island paradise, parasailing, water skiing and a bunch of other water sports.

And they also have an incredible national park to hike at – Black River Gorges National Park.

Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius – grab some interesting souvenirs, and explore the predominantly French architecture. Eat at cafes and explore museums here.

The verdict is in! This year, Mauritius is the place to be.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

Image: Sean Pavone / Shutterstock.com

If you find yourself wanting to go to the US, do not miss visiting New Orleans.

Known for being a hipster’s paradise, this place boasts drinks all day, amazing creole-cajun culinary feats, loads of amazing street food, and even some voodoo attractions to keep you on your toes.

A place known for its live music, dancing, amazing food and fun, this is the perfect travel spot for anyone wanting to let loose and have a good time on holiday.

3. Kampot, Cambodia

Image: bom bo / Shutterstock.com

Cambodia is more than just Angkor Wat and museums.

It’s got an amazing natural secret – Kampot.

A sleepy little riverside town, you’ll definitely feel time slow down here (perfect for us Singaporeans that are always rushing everywhere).

Explore Bokor Mountain for a beautiful, mystical experience, with incredible views. Watch the sunset go down in a blaze of fiery colours along the Kampot River, with Bokor in the backdrop.

Visit spice farms, have leisurely breakfasts, and treat yourself to a full spa day.

Kayak and swim in the river, if you want to. Kampot is for anyone who wants time to slow down so they can breathe and be reenergised.

It’s a leisurely, relaxing holiday destination that shows you Cambodia in a whole new light.

4. Bulgaria

Image: naskopi / Shutterstock.com

Bulgaria doesn’t immediately spring to mind when you’re talking about a European holiday, does it?

But this year, put Bulgaria on your list of places to visit.

With quintessential European architecture, the signature cobblestoned streets, beautiful blue waters and very affordable ‘on-the-ground’ costs (like food and accommodation), your romantic notions of an idyllic European holiday will be fulfilled.

Stroll through the picture-perfect streets, lounge at cafes, explore museums and art and enjoy some amazing (and cheap) street food.

Almost every spot in Bulgaria provides some insta-worthy shots, so your feed is sure to be the envy of everyone with all the pictures you take!

5. Zanzibar

Image: Nick Johanson / Shutterstock.com

Zanzibar is also not what springs to mind when someone speaks about travelling.

But it should be.

Not only are the on the ground costs decent, but it will give you a holiday experience like no other.

You can visit little local shops selling exotic souvenirs, herbs and spices, eat at the many cafes lining the quaint streets, and enjoy the resort life on the island with its blue af waters.

It’s a chill holiday destination that’s new, different and importantly, safe for tourists. Also, it’s perfect for those looking for non-traditional vacation destinations.

6. Yunnan, China

Image: buBUTuna / Shutterstock.com

Step into a whole new world when you visit Yunnan. Located in China, getting there from Singapore is pretty affordable (woohoo!).

And man, it’s really a place of fairytales.

It’s got breathtaking rice terraces, one of the world’s deepest canyons, delicious food like fried cheese and Yunnan BBQ, incredible snowcapped mountains straddling the border of Tibet and Yunnan, and amazing Oriental architecture.

This is where the sunrises and sunsets are absolutely unreal, the entire place is soul-refreshing and it’s basically on of the most beautiful places on earth.

Must. Go.

7. Togean Islands, Indonesia

Image: AsiaTravel / Shutterstock.com

Looking for a beautiful island retreat but don’t want to travel too far?

Togean Islands in Indonesia should make it on your list of the next place to go.

Perfect for people who want to dive, they have diving expeditions and diving schools, so if you are looking for a new spot to jump in, or want to learn this spot, this is for you.

For the more non-adventurous lot, spend your days lounging by the amazing blue waters, getting some spa treatments in, and stuffing your face with some delicious delicious Indonesian cuisine (the most important part, if you’re asking me).

The islanders are all super friendly and welcoming. You’ll feel so pampered and rejuvenated during your stay there, coming back to Singapore becomes a chore.

8. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

Image: Sun_Shine / Shutterstock.com

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located in the Bay of Bengal, making it another exotic ocean getaway without the hassle of travelling too far.

Live the life of luxury here by chilling out on the white beaches, exploring the surrounding islands, eating amazing food and treating yourself to some quality spa time.

The beautiful clear waters make this place perfect for snorkelling and diving, for those looking out for more adventurous activities.

Perfect as a romantic holiday spot, impress your significant idea by spontaneously suggesting a trip here.

Have candle-lit dinners by the water, go on long romantic strolls and enjoy connecting with each other away from the noise and distractions of busy everyday life.

9. Lombok, Indonesia

Image: soft_light / Shutterstock.com

If you want an adventure and don’t wanna go too far, our neighbour Indonesia has everything we need, yet again.

Lombok has everything from incredible natural blowholes, to pink sand and white sand beaches, the majestic active volcano Mount Rinjani (which you can climb, btw), waterfalls, and an otherworldly national park.

If you like to be on the go and want to see as much of this beautiful Earth as possible while you still can, this is the place for you.

You will have your breath continuously being taken away by the awesomeness of Mother Nature in Lombok.

10. Takayama, Japan.

Image: mTaira / Shutterstock.com

When you think about visiting Japan, often the classics come to mind – Tokyo, Hokkaido, Osaka, and the like.

But if you want to take the road less travelled, immerse yourself in Japan’s inland mountain culture at Takayama.

Not only do you get to see folky villages and step back in time at the Sanmachi Suji District, Takayama is also the starting point of a lot of Japanese alpine hikes/climbs.

After you’re done immersing in the rewinding of time with traditional villages, cafes and shops, head down to Kamikochi – the starting point for some of the best hikes in Japan’s alpine region.

You can also take a cable car to get some intense panoramic views of the entire Japanese Alps, if you don’t want to hike.

Stop by the UNESCO village – Shirakawa-go, and marvel at the traditional Japanese architecture that has carefully been preserved and maintained.

For those that want to experience Japan in a whole new way, Takayama is the place to be.

So, all that’s left to do is to start booking your trips to these amazing, exotic holiday destinations scattered all across the globe!

There is no way you will regret visiting any one of these stunning, less-travelled to destinations.
