14 M’sia Islands for Your Next Island Getaway

Malaysia is among the Southeast Asian countries rich in both stunning and exotic islands. From tropical rainforests to sparkling beaches, the Malaysian islands have them. Typically, the waters are great for scuba diving and snorkelling as they are as clear as crystals.

However, there is much more to experience when you visit the calming sands — cultural diversity, colonial villages, beautiful temples, and so much more. There is the promise of adventure, I would say. If you are looking to escape to seclusion and paradiso, these Malaysian islands could just be your next getaway destinations.

  1. Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are dear to those who travel on a budget as accommodation within the islands are known to be light on the pocket. The islands holds beaches and a tropical jungle every visitor would marvel at.

  1.  Pangkor Laut

If you’re looking for a little more variety than the typical secluded island paradise, you can try exploring Pangkor Laut. The vicinity is luxury private island of white sand beaches, emerald waters, and a wildlife forest. The island and the surrounding waters are home to some exotic animals like macaques, horn bills, sea eagles, and monitor lizards.

  1. Kapas Island (or Pulau Kapas)

The name “kapas” translates to “cotton”. The locals called the island so because of the its soft white beaches, calm waters, and gentle breeze. Due to these placid features, Kapas Island is a favorite spot for trekkers, snorkelers and scuba divers.

Kapas Island is regularly visited by tourists. It is situated only 5 kilometres away from the mainland (Marang) through ferry or speedboat. The accommodation options are higher in number compared to other islands with the addition of those in the mainland. Those along the coast of the island pledge a wonderful view of lights on the mainland.

  1. Tioman Island (or Pulau Tioman)

Pulau Tioman is a world-renowned, scenic Malaysian island. It is another go-to spot for snorkeling and scuba diving to see coral reefs. Bonus adventurous activities you can enjoy are jungle trekking, experiencing wildlife, and swimming under a waterfalls.

  1. Tenggol Island (or Pulau Tenggol)

Tenggol provides the best tropical experiences to its visitors — scuba diving, beach bumming, and jungle trekking, and viewing whale sharks. Get to the island via a ferry from Kuala Dungun.

Note: Tenggol is a traditional island with a “no pork” policy.

  1. Mabul Island (or Pulau Mabul)

Mabul Island is home to exotic marine animals like the scorpion fish, frog fish, goby, and cuttlefish. It is also the perfect destination for muck diving which is a form of diving but for muddy sediments with dead coral skeletons and man-made rubbish. Other water activities you can try are snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing.

Mabul in Sabah is also a land of coconut tree beaches and white sand with a surrounding crystal blue water. The coast houses high end hotels and a few hostels for tourist lodging. You can visit the island via ferry from Semporna.

  1. Redang Island

Another paradise-like island with white sand beaches and clear blue waters is Redang. Its waters are home to coral reefs, nemo fish, baby sharks, and jellyfish. These natural attributes make the island a hot spot for snorkelling and diving.

There is a Marine Park Centre as well, on Pulau Pinang Island. It’s also a research facility, and you can snorkel there as well.

  1. Rawa

Rawa in Johor is a coral island which can covered on foot in two hours. It is the best of both worlds. One side is a coast of beaches, and the other is a rocky cliff. You can enjoy swimming and beach bumming one day and be spotting monkeys, sea eagles, reef sharks, and other exotic wildlife the next. You can get to the island via boat ride from Mersing.

  1. Lankayan Island (or Pulau Lankayan)

If you wish to see whale sharks, Lankayan in Sabah is the island to be in. If they are too unruly for you, you can relax by the white sand beaches and casuarina trees. You can also watch turtles hatch from eggs. Taking a speedboat from Sandakan will get you to this unspoiled island.

  1. Banding Island

Banding Island is one of the most beautiful places in Malaysia. It is the base to explore the virgin Royal Belum Rainforest and the man-made Lake Temenggor. The protected rainforest is home to the world’s largest and smelliest flower, the rafflesia and other rare plant species.

One hot spot in the island is the must-try Floating Restaurant.

  1. Bohey Dulang Island

Bohey Dulang is a mountainous island formed by the remnants of an ancient volcano. The surrounding water is home to sea gypsies (bajau laut) and coral reefs. Within the island is a crater turned 25-meter deep lagoon.

Favorite activities when visiting the island are hiking to the peak for a majestic view of the blue lagoon, bird watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, and the Giant Clam and Marine Invertebrate Hatchery.

  1. Tiga Island (Pulau Tiga)

If you follow the reality series Survivor, you might have seen the wonders of Pulau Tiga. Hence, many refer to it as the Survivor Island. It is also famous for its therapeutic natural volcanic mud and snakes.

Tiga Island is just a boat ride from Kuala Penyu. It has only one resort — the Pulau Tiga Resort. Things to do at the island include snorkelling, kayaking, swimming, and diving. Diving courses are even available for those who wish to see underwater treasures.

  1. Labuan

Labuan in Borneo is a duty-free island and an off-the-shore financial center. It also presents the best of two worlds — the urban world and the island one. The urban side of the island offers fine dining and local shopping options. The island face of Labuan brings the delights of diving, trekking, and water village visits. Getting to the island can be done via an airplane or a ferry ride.


There you go — 14 islands you can escape to to get away from the city life. Getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday in just a speedboat or ferry from the mainland.
