While taking in the lively atmosphere filled with the sounds of street singers, you’re bound to find a great variety of cool items, such as local food, clothes, jade, and antiques. You can even get your fortune read if you’d like.
#4 – Visit a Dim Sum restaurant
Dim sum literally means “to touch your heart”. The diversity of dim sum dishes in Hong Kong is amazing, and restaurants mostly offer at least forty different dishes for customers to choose from, including mouth-watering classics like shrimp dumplings, congee, steamed pork dumplings, and spring rolls. Yum. Popular restaurants worth checking out include: Ding Dim 1968, Yum Cha, Lung King Heen,Lin Heung Kui, and more.
#5 – Jade Market
The Jade Market is where countless vendors sell an boundless variety of jade items. The market opens from 10am to 3pm daily, and its many offerings include jade Buddha statues, jewellery, and animal figurines. Jade is bring good fortune, balance, and peace to its wearers, making them perfect trinkets for your loved ones back home.
Tip: Top quality jade is pure green, and expensive- Most jade pieces have a yellow tinge. The best jadeite is semi-transparent, while opaque jadeite with cloudy patches is priced lower.
#6 – Lan Kwai Fong
Lan Kwai Fong is a young and lively amalgamation of clubs, bars and restaurants. A must-go for party people, the tourist spot features Western-style restaurants, nightclubs, delicatessens, and bars. Although Lan Kwai Fong only takes up a (crowded) two-block stretch, this small area never fails to emit the most lively and raucous late night vibes. Parties within Lan Kawi Fong can go on into the early morning, and there are even mass street parties on the weekend!
#7 – Star Ferry Crossing
Since 1888, Star Ferry boats have been faithfully carrying passengers between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Countless visitors have the Star Ferry rides for a up-close look at the country’s landmark Victoria Harbour, and to soak in the rich history teeming from the Star Ferry Crossing.
The ride takes around five minutes, and costs HK$2.50 on weekdays and HK$3.40 on weekends and public holidays for adults. Tickets for children cost around HK$2. Ferries leave approximately every 10-15 minutes.
#8 – Tai O Village
A visit to Tai O Village is unlike any other experience in Hong Kong. A far cry from the tourist attractions, bustling markets, and buzzing theme parks, Tai O is home to a community of fisherfolk called the Tanka. The Tanka build their homes on stilts, and revel in a quietly existence. You can take a tranquil boat rides around the village, visit the local markets, and sample some of the fresh seafood available. Rare sightings of the endangered pink dolphin have also been reported near the waters of Tai O Village.
#9 – Ladies Street (And more)
Aptly named for its inexhaustible plethora of clothes, accessories, cosmetics, household products, and more, the Ladies Street is a must-visit destination for every single tourist in Hong Kong, and is one of Hong Kong’s most famous markets. Hong Kong has tons of other prominent markets not included on this list: So you can take your pick with other notable attractions like Soho, Stanley Market, Cat Street Market, and more.
#10 – Dragon’s Back Hike
If you’ve had enough of the tight confines of Hong Kong and are ready for a little exercise, try escaping to the Dragon’s Back Hike. This famous trail offers spectacular views out over the ocean and various prominent bays, so you can expect to be greeted by the gentle sound of waterfalls, and the salty breeze of the sea. Simply invigorating!
The hike is relatively easy but be sure to start at Section 8. From here, your journey will take you up a short distance and mostly downhill with to Big Wave Bay. At this point, you may choose to catch a taxi or mini bus to Shek O, where there are a variety of great restaurants. Both areas are fantastic swimming spots, so don’t forget to bring your bathing suit and towel!
